Privacy & Fan Mail terms

Peanut Comics is made by Game Labs LLC. This page explains what we keep, why, and how Peanut Fan Mail works.

Accounts

• Reading comics needs a free account. Sign-in is handled by Google Firebase, and we keep the account's email address to recognise you.
• Kids under 13 should have a parent or guardian create the account.
• A grown-up sets up each reader with a first name and an age. We use the age to pick a reading level, and the first name and age to personalize comics. A parent PIN protects the grown-ups area.
• So grown-ups can see how reading is going, we keep each reader's reading stats: which comics and pages they read, reading time, story choices made and stickers earned.
• Your place in each comic is saved in your own browser. Stickers, streaks, story choices, quiz answers, reading settings and each reader's own character ("My Nut") are saved to the account too, so they follow the reader to every device.

Kids' privacy notice (for parents and guardians)

• Who sets it up: only a parent or guardian (or someone 13 or older setting it up for themselves) can add a reader. We ask the grown-up to agree to this notice, record when they did, and email the account a copy with instructions for deleting everything.
• What we keep about a child: the first name and age the grown-up typed, and their reading progress: pages, minutes, finished comics, story choices, quiz answers, stickers and settings. Kids never give us an email, photo, address or last name.
• Why: to pick the reading level, put the child's name in comics made for them, show grown-ups how reading is going, and keep progress on every device. Nothing else.
• What we never do: no ads, no selling or renting, no sharing for marketing, and no chat or messages between children.
• Your choices: in the grown-ups area (behind your parent PIN) you can see everything, download it (JSON and a reading-log spreadsheet), change or remove a reader, or delete the whole account. Deleting cancels Fan Mail first so you're never charged again.
• How long we keep it: while the account is open. Daily reading history is trimmed after about a year. When you delete the account it's removed from our server right away.
• You can also email us to see, change or delete a child's information: [email protected].

Verifying your email

• To unlock bonus comics, Fan Mail and payments, we email you a 6-digit code from Peanut Comics (sent through Resend, an email service). We keep a scrambled copy of the code for 10 minutes to check it, and a note that your email is verified.
• We only use your email for your account, codes and receipts. No newsletters unless you ask.

Peanut Fan Mail

• Fan Mail is for parents and guardians (18+) to buy for a child, or for adults buying it for themselves.
• The free Fan Mail week needs a verified email and a grown-up's OK. It's digital only (nothing is mailed), needs no card, and simply ends after 7 days.
• You type your card and mailing address on Stripe's secure checkout page. Stripe handles the payment. We never see or store the card number.
• We keep the name and mailing address from checkout so we can put it on the envelope. We also keep the child's first name if you give one (for "Dear ___"), and the letters and drawings sent to Peanut so Peanut can write back. Members can read them again in Peanut's Mailbox.
• Please keep letters to Peanut to a first name and a message. Don't include addresses, phone numbers, schools or last names.

Custom comics ($1)

• In the grown-ups area, a parent or guardian can describe a story and pay $1 for the Peanut Comics team to make it into a comic, usually within 8 hours.
• We keep the story, the title, the reader's first name and age, and the finished comic, so your family can read it. People on the Peanut Comics team read the story to make the comic.
• Please use first names only. Don't include last names, addresses, schools or anything else that identifies a child.
• If we can't make a comic (for example, if the story isn't suitable for kids), we decline it and refund the $1 in full.

Payment safety

• To stop stolen cards being tested on our site, when you start a payment we check the IP address you're connecting from with IPQualityScore and Scamalytics, two fraud-prevention services. They tell us whether the address looks like a VPN, proxy or known source of abuse. We send them the IP address only, not your name, email or card.
• We keep a short log of payment attempts (time, account email, IP address and the result) for our records, and we limit how many attempts one account or connection can make.
• If your connection looks risky, your bank may ask you to confirm the payment, or we may ask you to turn off your VPN and try again.

Schools and classrooms

• Teachers make a free teacher account with a verified email. They confirm that they are school staff and that their school allows them to use free reading websites with students. The school acts for parents in allowing classroom use.
• Students don't make accounts and never give an email. A teacher adds each student's first name and age (or the student joins with the class code), and the student signs in with the class code, their name and a secret picture.
• For each student we keep only their first name, age, secret picture, reading level and reading stats (pages, minutes and finished comics). Only their teacher can see them. Students can't chat, message anyone, buy anything or see ads.
• Teachers can remove a student, and their reading history, at any time. Deleting a class deletes all of its data. Teachers can download their class data and print a progress report for one student (for a conference or an IEP meeting). Parents can ask the teacher, or email us, to see or delete their child's data.
• A teacher can share a class with co-teachers (other teacher accounts they choose) and make a Substitute Pass: a code that shows a substitute the students' first names, sign-in pictures and assignments for a few days, with no scores.
• We act for the school under the school data terms (FERPA).
• Teachers who review Peanut Comics may send us feedback. We use it only to improve Peanut Comics.

Math and history comics

• Anyone signed in can read the built-in math practice and history comics. Answers are checked on our server, so the right answers aren't sent to the device in advance.
• Teachers can turn their own material (a worksheet, notes or a chapter) into a comic. The file is read in the teacher's own browser and only its text is sent to us. We keep that text, and the questions made from it, so the teacher can edit them. The Peanut Comics team may read the text and questions to improve them or fix mistakes. Please don't upload student work, grades or anything with students' personal information.
• Teachers can also make their own comics with the Comic Maker. We keep the panels and words they write so their students can read them. Please use first names only in class comics.
• For class students we keep their first answer to each question and whether it was right, so their teacher can see how the class did. Deleting the lesson, the student or the class deletes those answers.

Free AI help for teachers

• When it's switched on, the words from a teacher's file (or a photo of a worksheet) are sent to Cloudflare Workers AI, which writes draft quiz questions and reads the text in photos. It only sees the teacher's material, never anything about students. The teacher checks every question before students see it.
• Children never chat with the AI.

Homework and Peanut Games

• Teachers can give homework from the New Jersey learning standards, a history comic or their own comics. For each student we keep their first answer to each question and when they finished, so the teacher can see who is done.
• Peanut Games work without an account. Best scores are saved on the device. If a teacher turns on the class leaderboard, classmates see each other's first name and best score for the week, and nothing else.

Settings and time limits

• Grown-up settings (time limits, bedtime, hiding offers) are saved on the device, not on our server. Kids' reading settings (text size, speech bubbles, easy-to-read letters, voice speed and so on) are saved with the reader's progress so they work on every device.
• "Read to me" uses your device's own voice. What it reads never leaves the device.

Reading in other languages

• Comics can be read in 10 languages. The words in our comics are translated by MyMemory, a machine-translation service, and the translations are saved so everyone gets them instantly. We only ever send the comic's own words, never anything about the reader. In personalized comics the child's name is replaced with a stand-in before sending, and comics a family asked us to write are never sent: those are translated on your device when the browser can do that.
• Your language choice is saved in your browser.

Beta feedback

• Peanut Comics is in beta. The "Report a bug" button sends us your message, which screen you were on, the comic and page, the browser and screen size, and any error messages from the page, so we can fix the problem. It includes your email only if you're signed in or you type it in, so we can reply.
• Class students don't type messages to us. They pick from a short list (like "The pictures are blank"), and we don't receive their name.
• Each report also keeps Cloudflare's request number (a "Ray ID", also shown as the help code at the bottom of the page), so we can find that request in Cloudflare's logs. It doesn't identify you.

Visits, invites and bot checks

• We count visits and sign-ups by where they came from (for example "instagram" or "invite"), as daily totals only. We don't use tracking cookies, and the counts can't be linked to a person.
• Cloudflare, which keeps the site fast and safe, also counts page views for us with Cloudflare Web Analytics. It uses no cookies and doesn't track anyone across websites.
• Each account gets an invite link. When someone joins through it, we note which account invited them, only to award the inviter a sticker.
• To stop bots, a few actions (email codes, the free week and checkouts) may use Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks that a real browser is being used. See Cloudflare's privacy policy for details.
• Favorites are saved on your device only.
• If Cloudflare tells us which U.S. state a visit comes from, the welcome page may say "Welcome, reader from New Jersey!". We don't store it.

Rewards, weekly email and notifications

• A grown-up can promise a reward for a reading goal. We keep the goal, the note and when it was reached.
• The weekly reading email is off until a grown-up turns it on. It goes to the account's email every Sunday and has a one-click unsubscribe link.
• "Today's comic is live!" notifications are off until a grown-up turns them on for a device. We keep that device's notification address (from its browser) until it's turned off. The message is encrypted for that device.

Peanut Live, the teachers' library and class secret words

• In a Peanut Live class game, only students signed in to that class can join. Their first names and points show on the teacher's screen. The game is kept in memory only and is gone when it ends; answers aren't saved.
• Teachers can share their comics in the teachers' library. We check each one before other teachers see it. Only the teacher's title and last name show (and their school, if they choose). No student information is ever shared.
• A teacher can make secret words that unlock a class sticker. Students type the word; we only check whether it matches.
• A teacher's "good job" stamps are kept with the class (which stamp and when, up to 20 per student) so the student sees them next time. They're deleted when the student or class is removed.
• Vocabulary words a teacher picks are kept with the class and hidden in the comics that class reads.
• In a quick check (👍 🤔 👎), the teacher sees each student's first name next to their answer. Like Peanut Live, it's kept in memory only and is gone when it ends.

Word help, weather and the microphone

• Word help looks up a word's meaning in Wiktionary (Wikimedia's free dictionary) or the free dictionaryapi.dev. Our server asks for the word only, so nothing about the reader is sent. We keep a list of looked-up words and their meanings to answer faster.
• Silly Words: before we show a kid's own words in a comic, our server checks they're kind. We don't keep them; they only change the comic on that screen.
• "Fort Lee weather" shows the weather in Fort Lee, New Jersey, from the free Open-Meteo service. It's the same for everyone: we never ask for or send your location.
• The teacher's noise meter uses the microphone only to measure how loud the room is. Nothing is recorded or sent.
• "Record my voice" saves recordings in the browser on that device only. They are never uploaded, and "Wipe this device" (Settings, for grown-ups) deletes them.

Gifts

• Someone buying a gift code pays through Stripe, like any other payment. We keep the code, the gift, the "from" name and message they typed, who bought it and which account used it.

Things that stay on your device

• Time capsule notes, story maps, the "Tilt to look around" motion sensor, the ruler, laser pointer, focus, spotlight and magnifier tools, the name wheel, the timer, voice recordings, your town in "How far is the bridge?", and the phone's compass all work only on your device. Nothing from them is sent to us.
• Your backpack items, titles, stickers, streak shields, Reading Bingo, bookshelf, words read and reading speed are saved with your reading progress so they follow you to other devices.

Error reports

• If the site crashes or the 3D stops on a device, the page quietly tells us what broke: the error message, which screen, the device's screen size, memory and graphics chip, and the browser. No names, emails or account details. We use it only to fix bugs.

What we never do

• We don't sell or rent anyone's information, and we don't show ads.
• We only share what each service needs: Google Firebase for sign-in, Stripe for payments, IPQualityScore and Scamalytics for checking the IP address when you pay, Resend for sending emails (codes, the consent copy and the weekly email you turned on), your browser's push service for notifications you turned on, Cloudflare for security and bot checks, MyMemory for translating comic text (never information about readers), and the postal service for the address on the envelope.

Price, billing and cancelling

• Fan Mail costs $15 a month. It's charged once a month, starting the day you subscribe, until you cancel.
• Cancel anytime from "Manage Fan Mail" in your library. Cancelling stops future charges, and letters keep coming until the end of the month you've paid for.
• Letters mail in the first week of each month, to US addresses only. Your first letter goes out in the next monthly mailing.
• If a letter hasn't arrived by the 20th of the month, reply to your Fan Mail receipt email and we'll send it again.

Seeing, downloading and deleting your information

In the grown-ups area, "Your data" downloads everything we keep, and "Delete my account" deletes it all from our server straight away (teachers: "Your details" on the teacher dashboard). You can also email [email protected] from the address on the account and we will do it within 30 days. Payment records that the law requires us to keep stay with Stripe. Bug reports you sent stay, with your name and email removed.
